It is you to decide!

Digital Marketing is an existing, rapidly evolving sphere. One has to realize this and understand that the modern market demands not amateurs but skilled professionals in the area, as demand for Digital marketers with time will only grow.

How is a professional Internet marketer requirements must meet?

First, the professional marketer is always evaluated by certain set of basic theoretical knowledge of the principles of functioning of the global network, including an understanding of terminology and knowledge of network technologies at the user level (at least).

Second, the professional must understand the conceptual framework of classical marketing and to understand the methods used in its promotion.

Third, if the Digital marketer presents himself as a professional, he should have at least a basic knowledge of web-design and web site development.

Fourth, the person must know information relating to that practice digital marketer should avoid in their work.

Fifth, he must have the “inspirational knowledge” that he received as a result of reflection and analysis of the most successful marketing projects that have been implemented on the Internet.

Marketer should competently and honestly evaluate himself and decide whether he can be successful in this field with existing knowledge, or should even improve himself, learn and gain experience.

At Marketing of 21st Century we discussed different job opportunities that we can have in future. Also two ex-students that finished MSc Digital Marketing told us about their jobs, expectations and problems finding job.

Also after this lecture I was really considered exactly about problems finding job in our sphere and I found that some companies require specific attributes from the applicants, such as:

–                Experience in working with Google Analytics, Google AdWords, Banner networks

–                Web Design certificate

–                Experience with HTML, DHTML, XML and JavaScript

And the most awaken require is

–                Experience working in the direction of online marketing – FROM 3 to 4 years!

Due to that I thought about couple questions that might help you to understand if Digital Marketing is your calling. To correctly estimate your chances, answer the questions objectively and honestly:

–           What is you purpose when you go out to the Internet? What activities do you do for the longest time and the most? (if you connect to the internet for solving certain tasks, you have the basis of a marketer and you can manage your time, but if you are a mindless web-surfer, reconsider your outlook and choose another profession).

–           Can you deal with a long and monotonous routine work? (Digital marketing it is pretty routine and monotonous work on the analysis and data collection, preparation of plans, strategies and reports, and therefore you will need to have perseverance.)

–           Is it easy for you to communicate with other people? (Digital marketing is constantly in contact with different people and should know how to communicate and be sociable.)

–           Can you quickly learn a lot of information? (Digital marketer is always working with a lot of different information and should keep in mind the basic facts that will not get lost in the data.)

It is you to decide!

Everybody’s DNA

Year 2009… Ukraine… Kiev… Ukrainian State University of Finance and International Trade… Second Year of studing in the university…

The first time I heard about marketing…

“Basis of marketing” and “International Marketing” were my favorite modules…

I studied carefully lots of information about customer behavior, marketing channels, marketing planning and of course 4Ps and Marketing DNA.

Later as I was very interested in the “internet” I found job in Internet Company and it was the first time I discovered new to me marketing aspects. All this digital marketing communications, customer relationship management systems, new sales and distribution channels etc.

That was the point from which I understood what I want to do in future. I began searching web for any information that was related somehow to digital marketing. And that was the main reason why I have applied to University of Southampton on Digital Marketing Program.

Marketing in 21st Century module…

I was very excited when I heard from Dr. Bev words “NEW! DNA of Marketing”, well structured, easy understanding lecture…
This entire staff was very interesting for me, especially customer and market insight, Social CRM and predictive analytics.

On my opinion today’s culture is a culture of web space, and today’s marketing is digital. New channels of communication forever changed the way of spreading of information and decision-making by consumers. Therefore, agencies should adjust their services to help its customers in conquering marketing online universe.

I am sure that every professional in his or her field in the agency simply must now be “Digital”. Just because there is no one type of media that have not moved in this direction. I read a lot of opinions in the web about that it is necessary to integrate so-called “the inhabitants of the Internet” in the number of agency staff. I even found an article of Urs Gasser who is Doctor of Harvard’s Berkman Center in which he even invented the term “Digital Natives”.

“By age 20, kids will have spent 20,000 hours online – the same amount of time a professional piano player would have spent practicing” Dr. Urs Gasser

Who are these Digital Natives? Internet is an integral part of their lives, they understand what is going on under the roof of the Web and know how to apply it in the communications, which tool would be most appropriate for the usual consumer Internet space. Of course, it’s not about to hire the boy who spends 80 hours per week playing online games. No! It’s about professionals who are Digital Natives, and working in the departments of planning, creative, accounting, and etc. and will be able to help with the insights that transform agency into innovative organization.

I think this New DNA of Marketing is already incorporated into the DNA of so-called Digital Natives. All you need to do is just give them the freedom to experiment and explore. We work in the business, forcing customers to take risks, respectively, must be willing and ready to do the same for their development.

We are going to work in a business sphere that makes customer to risk, respectively, we should be willing and ready to do the same for their development.

What Companies Should Know About Digital Natives

It’s time to start writing my very first blog-post in my life.

Questions to discuss are given… Opportunities and challenges of studying Digital marketing. Yeap! Since recent time, I’m studying in Southampton University and want to obtain Masters Degree in Digital Marketing.

So… Where to start…?

Well, first of all I would like to say that in United Kingdom is a very different way of teaching in comparison with Ukraine. Teaching here is set up on a practical basis, throughout the lecture professor provides some examples mixed with theoretical part. While in Ukraine, most of all, you are given only entire theory. That is why it is very unusual for me but I like it a lot.

Also, at the University we have well structured system called “BlackBoard”, where professors post everything that is related to a certain module. It was the first challenge I faced with, because I never had experience with similar systems. I need to frequently check it for updates, things can sometimes change a lot. I’m still not used to that, though I am studying here for second month. My second challenge was that I need to communicate in English a lot, not just everyday chatting but professional discussions. Due to the fact that in Ukraine we never had lectures in English, except language lectures, at first it was hard to me to catch up some topics.

Southampton is very multinational university, there are many international students in my group such as Chinese, Romanians, Greeks, Taiwanese and couple of English but still I am the only one Russian speaking. At first I thought it was disadvantage, but now I understand that it is not only a good opportunity to practice and improve my English skills, but also it is a cross-cultural learning and nice chance to share experience.

So I have started talking about opportunities…

Actually for me the greatest opportunity is that I got a chance to obtain master degree in digital marketing because it will let me to do what I dreamed of since I finished studying at school. I was looking for this program for a long time due to the fact that in Ukraine there are no such studies and most marketers gain knowledge from their own work experience but it takes a lot of time. University of Southampton is one of the few universities that have it. While been here I already acquired couple of useful skills and got lots of interesting information, ideas and experience.

Students who study at University of Southampton in the future will be good specialists in their spheres and studying here is a great opportunity to get acquainted with them and keep in touch in future. But while we are still students, it is a good chance to find supporters or “confederates”  and maybe even create some project or start-up with help of gained knowledge, skills and experience in University of Southampton.

Overall, having all that challenges can improve you and give you great opportunities. As for me it is worth it!
